Its a mystery to me

So sang Roy Orbison... and I found myself humming that very tune as I wandered through a few photos this Sunday afternoon. Why, I know you ask? Well, I have come across two in locations which are mysteries to me.

This first one has a 45 and a 48 in a small loco depot, taken probably in the late 1960s or early 1970s. I had thought Cooma, but it could be Armidale for all I know.

This second one really has done my head in.  I would love it to be somewhere exotic like Batlow, but it could be Lithgow or somewhere out west.  This latter guess is based upon the cloud formation!

Any better guesses folks?

Cheers,
Don

  1. Hi Don
The first ones ARMIDALE ,not far from The End Of The Line. As the old engine shed has been replace , and looks very new and shiny,Its after 1976 .I think that's when the old one was pulled down. Also taken late after noon by the long shadows(not the Hank Marvin type)

  2. Hi Rohan,
Many thanks for this (including the musical reference!).

Had a suspicion about Armidale but it wasn't one of those places my family ever went to in the 1970s. I suspect it may have been taken on one of Dad's Nurail trips around 1976 or 1977... might have to rejog his memory.

  3. Hi Don,
I'm fairly confident that the second location is Batlow. The photograph was taken from the cold store siding while the train is standing on the main. Batlow's 50' turntable is hidden behind the gangers shed on the left.

  4. Hi Andrew,

Thank you! I was hoping it was Batlow. Then this too comes from Senior Jones's Nurail trip from 1976. And he was shooting colour fillum!

    Cheers,
    Don
